Mesothilioma
When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested the fibers can attach to the heart, lungs, stomach lining, or in the lining of the testicles. Over a period of 10-50 years, the embedded fibers can trigger tumor growth. According to the National Library of Medicine, mesothelioma is a disease that most often affects people who worked jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer. There are approximately 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma in the United States each year, with a median age of diagnosis at 74 years old. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type, affecting the lungs. Patients typically experience weight loss, general fatigue, abdominal or chest pain, and fluid buildup. After a biopsy that confirms a mesothelioma diagnosis, there is an average life expectancy of only 12 to 21 months. Malcolm McLaren died of mesothilioma yesterday at the age of 64. Described by his Wikipedia entry as a "performer, impresario, [and] self-publicist," he's best known as the manager of The New York Dolls, The Sex Pistols, Adam & The Ants, and Bow Wow Wow, as well as a recording artist who scored a hit with "Double Dutch." This really has nothing to do with wrestling, but as perhaps the most carny man in the entertainment industry, I feel that he's worth discussing here.
Nodular pleural thickening is usually a manifestation of malignancy and is seen as secondary deposits from various primaries,mesothilioma,lymphoma and invasive thymoma.On Computed Tomography (CT) scan,malignant pleural thickening is nodular (>1 cm),shows circumferential involvement,and involves the mediastinal pleura.At our institution we came across few cases of already proven tuberculosis (parenchymal ) which also had nodular pleural thickening as one the many myriad manifestations of tuberculosis.[fig.5] A case of nodular pleural masses was initially diagnosed as malignant on imaging but histopathological diagnosis was positive for epitheloid granulomas suggestive of tuberculosis.[fig.17] 041b061a72
